A VPN for travel, set up before you board

A VPN for travel protects your phone on hotel, airport and café Wi-Fi, and lets you choose where your traffic leaves from. Tunnexa is free on Android. Set it up at home, pick a nearby location for speed, and keep local apps like banking and maps outside the tunnel.

Using a VPN while traveling, from gate to hotel

Travel puts you on more strange networks in a week than you’d join at home in a year. The hotel network every guest shares. The airport hotspot with a name anyone could copy. The café with the password on a chalkboard.

With Tunnexa on, each of those networks only sees encrypted data going to one server, and your DNS lookups stay inside the tunnel. Our guide to using a VPN on public Wi-Fi covers what that protects, and what it doesn’t.

  1. 06:40 · Day 1Sign-in page

    Airport

Free Wi-Fi, no password. Finish the sign-in page, then Tap To Connect.

  2. 14:15 · Day 1Shared by every guest

    Hotel

Room number to log in. Connect before you open email, not after.

  3. 19:30 · Day 2Shared with the room

    Café

Password on the chalkboard. Tunnel on before the coffee arrives.

Speed

Using a VPN abroad? Pick a location near you

Every extra mile adds delay. When you’re abroad, the quickest choice is usually a location close to where you are now, not the one back home.

The server list shows the ping to each location before you connect. Green is 80 ms or less, amber is up to 150 ms, and red is slower. Pick green when you can.

Want to see every option first? Here are all the VPN server locations, each one free to use right now.

Travel VPN for Android: let local apps skip the tunnel

Some apps dislike VPNs. Your bank may ask for extra checks when it sees a login from a VPN server, and maps or ride apps can get confused about which city you’re in.

Split Tunneling fixes that. Pick the apps that should use the local connection directly, and everything else stays in the tunnel. It’s free with a Tunnexa account. Set up Split Tunneling.

Apps you leave out aren’t covered by the VPN. Most banking apps encrypt their own traffic, but keep the list short.

FAQ

Travel VPN questions

Something we missed? Write to us at support@tunnexa.com.

Do I need a VPN when I travel?

If you'll use hotel, airport or café Wi-Fi, it's worth having. A VPN encrypts your traffic before it reaches those networks and keeps your DNS lookups private. Tunnexa does it for free on Android.

Can I use a VPN abroad?

In most places, yes, but VPN laws differ by country and a few restrict them. Check the rules for each country on your trip, and follow local law while you're there.

Why doesn't my banking app work with a VPN abroad?

Banks watch for logins from unexpected places, and a VPN server's address can look like one. Add the app to Split Tunneling so it uses the local connection directly.

Which VPN location should I use while traveling?

Usually the one closest to you, with a green ping in the server list. Distance adds delay, so a nearby location feels quicker than one back home.

Will a travel VPN let me watch my shows from home?

We don't promise that. Streaming services decide where their shows are available, and those rules apply with or without a VPN.

Does Tunnexa work on hotel Wi-Fi with a login page?

Yes, once you're signed in to the Wi-Fi. Finish the hotel's login page first, then tap connect. If it stalls, try OpenVPN TCP with a free account.
