VPN for gaming: honest answers about ping

A VPN for gaming won't magically cut lag. It usually adds a little, because your game traffic takes a detour through the VPN server. What it does well: it shows you the ping before you connect, keeps your home IP away from other players, and lets a game skip the tunnel when you'd rather it did.

The honest bit

Does a VPN for mobile games lower ping?

Usually not. Without a VPN, your phone talks to the game server along whatever route your provider picks. With one, it goes to the VPN server first, then on to the game. That extra stop normally adds a little delay.

Now and then the VPN’s route happens to be better than your provider’s, and ping drops. It depends on where you are, where the game server is and the paths in between, so we won’t promise it.

Treat ping as something to check, not something to hope for. Connect, look at the number, play a round, and keep whichever setup feels better.

Keep your home IP to yourself

In some games and voice chats, other players can see the IP address you connect from. With Tunnexa on, they see the server's address, not your home's.

Let a game skip the tunnel

Prefer the direct route for one game? Split Tunneling lets chosen apps bypass the VPN, so the game plays direct while your browser and chats stay in the tunnel. Free with an account.

Gaming VPN questions

Want to check your own ping? Get Tunnexa free.

Does a VPN reduce ping in games?

Usually not. A VPN adds a stop on the way to the game server, so ping often goes up a little. Sometimes a better route brings it down, which is why it's worth checking before you play.

Is a VPN good for mobile gaming?

For some things. It helps you pick a low-ping location, hides your home IP from other players, and keeps you private on public Wi-Fi. It isn't a lag fix.

What is a good ping for mobile games?

80 ms or less feels responsive in most online games. That's the green band in Tunnexa's server list. Up to 150 ms is amber and playable. Above that, try a closer location.

Which VPN protocol is best for gaming?

Start with WireGuard. It's Tunnexa's quickest option and free for guests. If your network won't let it connect, OpenVPN UDP is the next one to try.

Can I get banned for using a VPN in a game?

Some games don't allow VPNs, or changing region with one. Check the game's terms before you play connected. Split Tunneling can keep a game off the VPN entirely.

What is Game Mode?

A planned set of Specialty servers for low ping in online games. It comes with Premium, which is coming soon. Get notified when it launches.
